Did you know that Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, two of the most celebrated days of the year which occur in December, are among the deadliest?

That’s why we, at Social Model Recovery Systems (SMRS) are observing National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, a campaign to raise awareness and prevent impaired driving caused by alcohol, drugs, or other factors. SMRS is dedicated to addressing substance use and co-occurring mental health problems through various treatment services across 11 locations in Los Angeles County.

National Impaired Driving Prevention Month serves as a crucial time to reflect on the alarming statistics surrounding impaired driving in the United States. With over 10,000 preventable deaths occurring annually due to impaired driving, the need for awareness and proactive measures cannot be overstated.

The statistics are stark – more than 10,000 Americans lose their lives each year in crashes that could have been prevented. A staggering one-third of fatal car accidents involve alcohol, with 26 million people admitting to driving under the influence in 2020 alone.

These incidents not only jeopardize the lives of those directly involved but also pose a significant threat to law enforcement officers working diligently to ensure road safety. The ripple effect of a single drink or pill can be catastrophic, leading to a cascade of consequences that impact individuals, their loved ones, and the community at large.

During National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, SMRS calls upon individuals, families, and communities to unite in the effort to save lives.

Our organization emphasizes the importance of planning ahead, calling for a ride, and committing to driving only when sober. By fostering a culture of responsibility and mutual support, we can collectively contribute to a safer and healthier society.

As a leading provider of Residential, Day Treatment, and Outpatient services for substance use and co-occurring disorders, our agency plays a vital role in addressing the root causes of impaired driving.
