International Stress Awareness Day is commemorated annually on the first Wednesday of November.

Stress is an everyday part of life – something we all experience. The World Health Organization defines stress as “a state of worry or mental tension caused by a difficult situation”. Excessive stress can take a toll on our physical and mental health, and for those on the path of recovery, it can be a formidable obstacle.

Today, on Stress Awareness Day, we at Social Model Recovery Systems are shedding light on the critical role stress plays in recovery, and how awareness and coping strategies can make a world of difference.

The Link Between Stress and Substance Abuse

Many turn to substances as a way to cope with life’s challenges, escape emotional pain, or numb their stress. This may provide temporary relief, but in the long run, it often aggravates the problem and leads to a vicious cycle of dependency. It’s essential to recognize the relationship between stress and substance use, as this awareness can help those in recovery better understand their triggers and develop healthier coping mechanisms.

Here are a few healthy ways to cope with stress:

1. Mindfulness and Meditation

Meditation involves focusing on one’s breath in a quiet space, while mindfulness emphasizes being fully engaged in the moment by connecting with the senses. These are powerful techniques for reducing anxiety and stress by helping individuals stay present and gain perspective on their emotions.

2. Healthy Lifestyle Choices

Prioritizing healthy lifestyle choices, including exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep, is essential for stress reduction and improved mental health. Regular physical activity releases mood-elevating endorphins, while a balanced diet with nutrient-rich foods stabilizes blood sugar levels and promotes emotional well-being. Adequate sleep serves as a crucial reset mechanism, enhancing resilience against daily stressors and contributing to a more balanced and contented life.

3. Positive Social Connections

Positive social connections are a cornerstone of effective stress management and recovery. Encouraging individuals to build supportive, sober relationships not only offers a sense of belonging and camaraderie but also serves as a formidable shield against the detrimental effects of stress.

4. Reevaluate Priorities

Sometimes, stress is a sign that we are taking on too much. Setting realistic life goals and priorities can empower one to recognize when stress is an indicator of being overburdened, prompting necessary adjustments for a more balanced and less stressful life.

On Stress Awareness Day and every day, Social Model Recovery Systems is dedicated to supporting individuals in their recovery journey. By promoting awareness and offering coping strategies, we can help individuals better navigate their recovery journey and build a foundation for a healthier and brighter future.
