Residents have the opportunity to create their own customized jewelry, led by Program Director Sarah Tostado and Alcohol and Drug Counselor Eileen McKinnis, which adds a deeply personal and empowering dimension to their recovery journey.

River Community residents craft stunning jewelry, each piece a work of art.

River Community is a program of Social Model Recovery Systems (SMRS), that stands as a beacon of hope and healing for adults with co-occurring disorders. We believe in holistic recovery, which extends beyond traditional therapy and treatment. One of the ways we foster a sense of community and personal growth is through creative activities like jewelry-making.

Eileen, our dedicated jewelry-making facilitator, plays a vital role in making this creative endeavor a meaningful and therapeutic experience for our residents. Eileen brings her expertise, compassion, and commitment to the forefront of this activity, enriching the residents’ journey of self-expression and personal growth.

Through this creative outlet, residents embark on a journey of healing, self-discovery, and personal growth that goes far beyond crafting beautiful jewelry. It is a testament to the transformative power of art and community in the recovery process.

Here are some of the benefits of Jewelry-Making for Residents

  • Jewelry-making is more than just a creative pastime; it’s a therapeutic outlet that provides numerous physical, emotional, and mental benefits for our residents.
  • Stress Reduction: Creating jewelry allows individuals to focus their attention on a specific task, effectively reducing stress and anxiety levels. The rhythmic and repetitive nature of crafting promotes relaxation and mindfulness.
  • Self-Expression: Expressing oneself is crucial in the recovery process. Jewelry-making serves as a powerful medium for residents to convey their emotions, experiences, and personal stories through the pieces they create.
  • Self-Esteem Boost: Completing a jewelry project instills a sense of accomplishment and boosts self-esteem. Residents can take pride in their creations, fostering a positive self-image.
  • Social Connection: Crafting jewelry in a group setting encourages social interaction and a sense of belonging. Residents form bonds with their peers through shared experiences, building a strong support network.

Beyond the therapeutic benefits of jewelry-making, residents at River Community also enjoy the social and recreational aspects of these activities. Crafting sessions become moments of camaraderie, where individuals share stories, encourage one another, and learn from each other’s experiences. These activities contribute to a sense of community, helping residents feel less isolated and more connected to their peers.

It is more than just a craft; it’s a powerful tool for healing, self-expression, and personal growth. Through creative activities like these, we empower our residents to take control of their recovery journeys and build lasting connections with their peers.

At River Community, we believe in the transformative power of creativity, and we’re committed to providing our residents with the tools and opportunities to thrive in their recovery.
