On June 14, Royal Palms hosted a BBQ/Talent Show to celebrate “Pride Month” organized by SMRS LA Regional Director, Melanie Arellano and Royal Palms Program Director, Vanessa Ramos.

Pride Month is a widely celebrated occasion that takes place every year in June to honor and support the LGBTQ+ community. It serves as a time for LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies to come together, raise awareness, promote acceptance, and advocate for equal rights and protections.

The event started with an introduction by Vanessa to explain the purpose of the event and was then followed by a presentation by the residents and a BBQ lunch.

Mariposa, Bimini, and Omni staff and residents participated in the celebration to show support for the LGBTQ+ community and to stand against discrimination and prejudice. It was a  fun-filled day with friends/colleagues, laughter, great food, and fabulous prizes.

During Pride Month, cities around the world organize a variety of events and activities to celebrate LGBTQ+ identities and promote inclusivity. These events often include Pride parades, marches, rallies, festivals, parties, educational workshops, art exhibits, film screenings, and panel discussions. They provide spaces for LGBTQ+  individuals and allies to express their pride, share stories, and build connections.

Pride Month has historical significance as well. It commemorates the Stonewall Riots, which took place in June 1969 in New York City and were a pivotal moment in the LGBTQ+  rights movement. The riots were in response to police raids targeting LGBTQ+ establishments and served as a catalyst for LGBTQ+ activism and organizing.

While Pride Month is traditionally celebrated in June, some regions may have different dates for their Pride events, but all events are supportive of and promote the rights of our LGBTQ+ family.
