September was National Recovery Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness and understanding of mental health and substance use disorders.

This sends a message of hope and highlights the essential connection between behavioral health and overall well-being. To commemorate this special month, we celebrate individuals in the different stages of their recovery journey, honor the contributions of treatment providers, and share the powerful message that recovery is not just possible – it’s a reality.

On September 29, we held our annual Recovery Happens event, organized by Melanie Arellano, Regional Director of Los Angeles County Programs, and Vanessa Ramos, Program Director of Royal Palms. Social Model Recovery Systems staff, alumni, participants, and residents came together at Whittier Narrows Park to celebrate recovery.

At the heart of the Recovery Happens event, our dedicated maintenance staff showcased their culinary skills at the grilling stations. With smiles on their faces, they expertly manned the grills, infusing the air with the enticing aroma of barbecue. Beyond just cooking, they fostered an atmosphere of togetherness and warmth. They took pride in preparing dishes that brought smiles to the faces of attendees, embodying the belief that recovery is not just possible but worth savoring.

The smiles and camaraderie extended far beyond the grilling stations to our staff members from our different programs who transformed into gracious hosts. They went above and beyond to ensure that attendees felt welcomed and supported. Their genuine enthusiasm and commitment to community and recovery were truly a highlight of the event.

It was more than just an event; it was a heartwarming and social occasion, offering a chance to connect with the community, access valuable resources, and learn about prevention and treatment options. The event’s charm lies in its delightful mix of social and recreational activities, providing an ideal setting for individuals to come together. As attendees savored delicious food, engaged in games like Jenga and cornhole, and moved to the rhythm of music, they also engaged in meaningful conversations, shared inspiring stories of resilience, and celebrated the unique and transformative journey of recovery.

“Recovery Happens” exemplifies the spirit of National Recovery Month, where hope, community, and support take center stage. It’s a reminder that recovery is a journey worth celebrating and that no one is alone on this path. As we look forward to future Recovery Happens events and continue to raise awareness, let’s remember that recovery truly does happen.
