On Sunday, May 8, Bimini residents celebrated Mother’s Day by remembering the mothers who passed away.

The residents spoke about their best childhood memories and one stated, “I am strong because of the woman who raised me. You are always in my heart, mom.” Bimini wants to honor all mothers on this special day.

Mother’s Day is a day to celebrate motherhood and appreciate all the moms, including (great-)grandmothers, stepmothers, foster mothers, and other mother figures. The history goes way back: the modern holiday was first celebrated in 1908. Anna Marie Jarvis was the founder of this holiday in the United States.

Anna was an active activist, to today, she’s acknowledged as “inventing” Mother’s Day in an effort to honor her mom, Ann Jarvis. Ann was Anna’s mother. She spent the majority of her time raising awareness of the mortality rate of infants. As per National Geographic in the 1850s, she started hosting mothers’ clubs to educate them on how to take care of their children and reduce the number of deaths.

Since mothers have held a vital role in society, we have celebrated this day to honor their contributions.
